These Chocolate Covered Cherry Truffles are healthy but delicious, and only require 5 ingredients to make!
Do you have a favorite childhood candy? I’ll admit I have quite a few, but those Chocolate Covered Maraschino Cherries were always pretty high up on that list. I know that may sound unconventional…but this is also coming from the girl who requested blueberry pies instead of birthday cakes for her first few trips around the sun.
These Chocolate Covered Cherry Truffles are inspired by those neon, sticky, and sickly sweet truffles of my past, but they’re definitely a healthier take on it. And all you need are 5 simple ingredients!
First of all, we’re going to get rid of those Maraschino Cherries. While I used to love them, I know there are quite a few people who do not. Plus, they’re usually dyed using unnatural colors, and most of them contain high fructose corn syrup – an ingredient I definitely try to avoid.
Next, we’re going to add in some Oats and Medjool Dates for some natural sweetness and plant-based fiber. Not only will these treats satisfy your sweet tooth, but they will keep you satiated much longer!
Then, we’ll add in a splash of Vanilla Extract, blend, et voila! All that’s left is to form some balls with our “dough” and then to dip them in some melted chocolate.
While this recipe is simple, it sure does hit the spot. I hope you enjoy these as much as I do! If you do recreate them and post a photo on Instagram, be sure to tag me @frommybowl + #frommybowl so I can envy your yummy treats 🙂
A Few Final Thoughts:
- I melted some Enjoy Life Foods mini chips for this recipe, but if you’re looking for a refined-sugar free option I would also recommend Eating Evolved Chocoalte or Libby’s, which is sweetened with Stevia.
- You can store these truffles in either the fridge or the freezer. While they’ll last a little longer in the latter, I prefer them to have a slightly softer bite and keep mine in the former.
- If you’d like to take the Cherry flavor up another notch, I would highly suggest adding ½ tsp of Almond Extract to the Cherry dough. It’s a game changer!
Healthy Chocolate Covered Cherry Truffles
These Chocolate Covered Cherry Truffles are healthy but delicious, and only require 5 ingredients to make!
- Prep Time: 60 minutes
- Total Time: 60 minutes
- Yield: 11 Balls 1x
Ingredients
- 1 cup Frozen* Cherries, thawed
- 1/2 cup Medjool Dates, Pitted
- 1 tsp Vanilla Extract
- 1 cup Oat Flour*
- 3/4 cup Vegan Chocolate Chips*
Instructions
- First, add the Frozen Cherries, Medjool Dates, and Vanilla Extract into a blender or food processor. Blend until everything is well-combined and there are no large chunks of fruit.
- Second, add in the Oat Flour to the food processor and pulse until a sticky dough forms.
- Use a 1 tbsp measure to scoop out portions of the dough, and place them onto a plate or small tray lined with parchment paper. The dough will be easier to handle if you wet your fingers for this step.
- Place the plate or tray into your freezer for 45 to 60 minutes, to allow the balls to harden.
- Melt 3/4 cup of Chocolate Chips using either a Double Boiler or the microwave, then dunk each “ball” into the melted chocolate mixture until it is well coated. Return to the parchment-paper lined tray, and allow the chocolate to harden before serving. Repeat with the remaining “balls.”
- Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 1 week.
Notes
I would recommend the use of frozen Cherries over fresh ones for this recipe, as they become softer once they thaw and will blend easier into a smooth paste
If you do not have Oat Flour on hand, simply blend 1 cup of Quick or Rolled Oats in a high speed blender or food processor, until they have a fine consistency. This usually takes about 30-45 seconds.
I used the Enjoy Life Foods Dark Chocolate Morsels for this recipe.

Are you to thaw the frozen cherries before blending with the oat flour and dates?
Yes!
Very good inique taste, even without the chocolat. Mine were a bit too soft but I did cheat on the defrost time for the cherries. They were probable retaining too much juice. Definitely a keeper recipe. Merci beaucoup!!

Ah yes, the extra liquid probably came from the cherries. But glad you enjoyed it!
These were delicious but I found the chocolate to be a little thick. Is there a healthy way to have a thinner chocolate? The only way I know to thin out chocolate is with oil.
That’s true, the only method I’m aware of is with the introduction of some sort of fat. Water is definitely a no. Maybe a different type of chocolate percentage?
I’ve tried them and they turned out to be soo delicious! Thanks for sharing this recipe with us 🙂

I bet that was super yummy!
Can you use regular flour or would that make it taste gross? Love your videos!!
You are not supposed to eat raw flour – I would use either oat flour or buckwheat flour, but that’s it!
What other fruit can you use for this? Can we use frozen blueberries maybe?
Yes, that would work!
almond flour instead of oat flour?
That should work, but you may need to add a little more
I just made these & my whole family loves them! ????????

Hey Caitlin! The recipe seems truly delicious, but will it work if instead I use vegan white chocolate ?Unfortunately a few months ago I found out that I am allergic to dark chocolate????
Vegan White Chocolate is hard to find, but it should work as a substitute!
Yuuuummmyyy 😛 Just made these and they came out so well. I love secretly feeding vegan treats to my non-vegan family members
Nice work on this one Caitlin <3
