I love a good smoothie in the morning…but I am also one of those people who seems to go a biiiit over the top in terms of ingredients. Don’t get me wrong – my smoothies always taste delicious! However, somedays I’m in a rush and don’t want to spend 5-10 minutes on measuring and opening various jars, powders, and freezer bags of fruit.

Enter: the Superfood Smoothie Cube

The concept of these cubes is simple: add all of your normal smoothie ingredients to a blender with as little water as possible to form a paste, then freeze into cubes and save for later! This way you’ll have all your favorite smoothie goodies in one spot and come a busy morning, only have to add these cubes + water to your blender in order to have a tastyhealthy, and nourishing breakfast.

ingredients for superfood smoothie cubes

This recipe is highly customizable, but here’s what I decided to add to my Superfood Smoothie Cubes:

  • Banana, for a little sweetness
  • Berries, for antioxidants + flavor
  • Zucchini, for volume (and because I hate ice in smoothies – you can’t taste it, I promise!)
  • Ground Flax, for lignans and phytoestrogens (aka hormonal balance)
  • Nut Butter, for creaminess
  • Leafy Greens, for #health
  • Cinnamon, because I’m addicted and it tastes amazing 😉

Last but not least, a serving of Sunfood’s Superfood Smoothie Mix! I love this mix because it’s a great source of plant-based protein, but it’s also full of my favorite superfoods, including Chia, Maca, Lucuma, and Acai powders. My fruit and veggie combos are already extensive, so it’s nice to have a “one-stop-shop” when it comes to my smoothie superfoods.

Once you have your superfood smoothie “paste”, you’ll use a spatula to spread it into ice cube molds, then freeze overnight. Pop a few cubes into your blender with some filtered water the next day, and store the rest in a freezer-safe bag or container to last you through the week.

A Few Final Thoughts:

  • Feel free to customize and substitute the fruits and veggies in this recipe as you see fit! As long as everything blends into a paste, the recipe will work.
  • On that note – if you do not have a high-speed blender with a tamper, I would actually suggest making these in a food processor, since we do not want to add extra liquid to them.
  • I used these re-usable silicone molds to make my smoothie “cubes,” and thought they worked great! Keep in mind that if you are making this recipe for Meal Prep, you will need several ice cube trays to get you through the week.

Superfood Smoothie Cubes

Make these Superfood Smoothie Cubes ahead of time for a quick and healthy breakfast. Simply add them to a blender with liquid, blend, and enjoy!

  • Author: Caitlin Shoemaker
  • Prep Time: 15 Minutes
  • Cook Time: 0 Minutes
  • Total Time: 15 minutes
  • Yield: 1 Smoothie 1x
  • Category: Breakfast
  • Method: Blender
  • Cuisine: American

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup Berries
  • ½ Banana
  • ½ tbsp Nut or Seed Butter
  • 1 tbsp Ground Flax
  • ½ tsp Cinnamon
  • Large Handful of Greens
  • ⅓ cup Zucchini Slices
  • 3 tbsp Sunfood’s Superfood Smoothie Mix

Instructions

  1. First, add all of the smoothie ingredients to a high-speed blender and blend together until a thick paste forms – try not to add any liquid! If you do not have a blender with a tamper, you may want to do this step in a food processor as well.
  2. Use a spatula to scoop the Smoothie “paste” into ice cube molds and spread it across the molds evenly to fill them.
  3. Freeze overnight, then store the cubes in freezer-safe containers until ready to use.
  4. To Make a Smoothie: allow the Superfood Smoothie Cubes to sit at room temperature for 5 minutes to slightly thaw, then add to your blender with 1 1/2 – 2 cups of Filtered Water (depending how thick you like it). Blend until smooth, top as desired, and enjoy!

Notes

  • It does not matter if your Veggies are fresh or frozen, as they will all be frozen later anyways. If you have a weaker blender, it may be best to use fresh!
  • Ingredients above are for one serving of smoothie, but you can multiply the recipe as you see fit.
  • If you’d like a creamier smoothie, substitute the Filtered Water with Non-Dairy Milk.

  1. Superfood smoothie cubes is a great idea to enjoy smoothie even in busy morning. I will definitely try this and share my experience after that. And, I am sure it will go amazing. You explain this recipe simply step by step. So, thanks for it.

    1. It’s all a matter of personal preference, the recipe is what worked for us with freezing in mind!

  2. This is great! I hate freezing the individual ingredients in mini Ziploc bags because they get stuck together. However, blending them beforehand and then freezing them into cubes probably yields a much better tasting product. My fave smoothie combination: acai, blueberries, almond milk, cinnamon, vanilla extract, protein powder, spinach, and some cacao powder! It’s SENSATIONAL!

  3. This was very eash to make! i havent tasted yet but im sure it will be great! I do have a question. Does this really yeild 1 smoothie? it made 18 cubes for me and that seems like alot.
