This Chocolate Hemp Smoothie is rich, creamy, and satisfying! It’s naturally packed with plant-based protein and will keep you full until lunch.

While I have been known to chuck a million-and-two things into my blender for a smoothie, sometimes it’s just nice to keep things simple. This Chocolate Hemp Smoothie is made with only 6 healthy ingredients, is rich and creamy, AND it has 15g of plant-based protein…without the use of Protein Powders!
Oh, yeah. It also tastes like a liquefied Dark Chocolate Bar. And if that doesn’t convince you to give this Smoothie a try, I’m not sure what will 😉
We’ll start with a base of NonDairy Milk and Frozen Bananas, then add in some Cacao Powder, Hemp Hearts, Almond Butter, and Cinnamon…that’s it! I love using Hemp Hearts in my smoothies because they:
- Provide a great dose of plant-based protein (3 tbsp has 10g!), and
- Blend really easily, regardless of your blender’s power – so everyone can enjoy this thick and creamy smoothie!
Because this Smoothie is made with minimal ingredients, I’d recommend getting the highest quality possible for best texture and flavor. I’ve been a fan of Sunfood for a while now not only because of the quality of their products, but also because of their commitment to sustainable sourcing! I used Sunfood’s Organic Cacao Powder and Sunfood’s Shelled Hemp Seeds for this recipe. They’re pantry staples for me, and after you try them out, I you’ll want to keep them around too 😉
If you’re feeling extra fancy, you can definitely toss in some extra Protein Powder, a handful of Greens, or other Superfood Powders of your choice. But you know what? I quite enjoy this smoothie as it is, in all of it’s yummy simplicity.
It’s satisfying enough to keep me full until lunch, but tastes indulgent enough that I may even consider whipping up a glass or two of it for dessert on a hot day.

This Chocolate Hemp Smoothie is rich, creamy, and satisfying! It’s naturally packed with plant-based protein and will keep you full until lunch.
- Prep Time: 10 Minutes
- Cook Time: 0 Minutes
- Total Time: 10 minutes
- Yield: 1 Serving 1x
- Category: Breakfast
- Method: Blender
- Cuisine: American
Ingredients
- 2 tbsp Sunfood’s Cacao Powder
- 2 tbsp Sunfood’s Shelled Hemp Seeds
- 1 cup Unsweetened Non-Dairy Milk
- 1 ½ Frozen Bananas, cut into pieces
- 1 tbsp Almond Butter
- ½ tsp Cinnamon
- Pinch of Salt (trust me!)
- Optional Ingredients: 1 scoop Protein Powder, Ice, Sweetener to taste*
Instructions
- Add the Non-Dairy Milk to a large high-speed blender, followed by the Frozen Banana and remaining ingredients. Blend until smooth and creamy; add more Milk to the Smoothie if you’d like it to be thinner, or Ice if you’d like it to be thicker.
- Pour into a glass and enjoy!
Notes
- Almond Butter can be substituted with any other Nut or Seed Butter of choice
- If you do not add Protein Powder to this recipe, I would recommend adding at least 2-3tsp of Sweetener of your choice. Otherwise, the Smoothie will taste very bitter. If you’d like to avoid added sugar, use more frozen Banana!

Hi Caitlin! In one of your latest videos (what I ate + cooking for non-vegan family) I noticed you made this smoothie without milk, almond butter nor protein powder, would the quantities be the same? I’m dying to make smoothies and I never buy milk
Hi Diana, you can replace the nut milk with water instead! 🙂
Excellent recipe! The taste reminds me of chocolate mousse.
I made it as a smoothie bowl and used half of a frozen banana, sweetened almond milk and topped it with strawberries and vanilla cheerios. I will definitely make this more often.

This came out phenomenal! I only wanted to use 1 banana, so I used a little bit of frozen avocado instead. And then only one tbsp of cacao powder- but omg it tastes so good!! I’m glad you put in the part about trusting you on the salt because otherwise I would have definitely skipped it lol!

My husband and I have been making this smoothie regularly for over a year now. We love it! We now buy all the ingredients from Costco so we always have enough on hand to make it. Lol! Just wanted to pop in and say thank you for sharing it 🙂

Could I use avocado instead of banana?
We haven’t tried that but I don’t see why not! Might need a little tweaking. If you give it a shot let us know how you like it!
Hi there. I wanted to pop in and say that I’m really enjoying your blog and also to ask where you got that glass/ cup!
Thanks, Britt! The cups are from amazon – they are actually designed for beer, haha
A smoothie that tastes like a melted dark chocolate bar sounds like MY kind of smoothie. Rich, chocolatey, healthy, sweet, and creamy? I certainly have to try whipping these up! Hopefully I can find hemp seeds that aren’t ridiculously overpriced–same with the almond butter, haha!
