These Vegan BLT Sandwiches are perfect for a hearty and tasty on-the-go meal! Piled high with crisp Lettuce, Tomato, Tempeh “Bacon”, and a healthy Mayo.
To be honest…just writing about the combination of crisp Lettuce, juicy Tomato slices, and smoky Tempeh “Bacon” is making me drool.
Let’s get into it, shall we?
Even though I was raised as a vegetarian, I still enjoyed my fair share of BLTs. We just subbed the “Bacon” for a store-bought vegetarian version! I decided to make these Vegan BLT Sandwiches with the Smoky Tempeh recipe that I just added to the blog. Normally I’d just add it to Buddha Bowls, but wanted to show you all how yummy and versatile it is! It’s very easy to prep in larger batches and have throughout the week.
In terms of the rest of the ingredients….well, you should know what goes in a BLT 😉 All you’ll need is a few slices of your favorite bread, some fresh Lettuce (I recommend Butter Lettuce), and Tomatoes! Let’s not forget the Mayo, though. You can use storebought if you’d like, but I prefer to use my Easy Homemade Mayo Recipe instead. It tastes just like Mayonnaise, but is oil-free and made from whole food ingredients! There’s both Nut AND Soy free options as well.
Now, let’s be honest – making a sandwich is not very complicated. That’s probably why it’s a lunch staple for so many of us! However, there’s a not-so-fine line between a good sandwich and a soggy and sad desk lunch. On that note, here are a few sandwich-making tips that I think may come in handy.
First, Toast. Your. Bread. Please. Not only does it increase the depth of flavor of the bread itself, but it also “dries” the bread out a bit to prevent future sogginess.
Second, don’t but your “spreads” directly on the bread! Ok, it’s still perfectly acceptable to spread your Mayo on your bread, especially if you are enjoying your sandwich right away. However, I like to create a “barrier” to my spreads if I am prepping my sammy ahead of time. In the case of this Vegan BLT, I would actually layer some Lettuce on each side of the bread, and then spread the Mayo on top of that. It’s a little tricker to spread around, but makes the end result worth it 😉

Okay, enough with the chit-chat. Let’s make some Sandwiches!
PrintVegan BLT Sandwiches with Smoky Tempeh “Bacon”

- Total Time: 10 minutes

- Category: Sandwich
- Method: Toaster Oven
- Cuisine: American
Ingredients
- 2 slices of Bread, Gluten-Free if necessary
- 1/3 recipe of Smoky Tempeh, or enough strips to fit on your bread
- 1/2 large Tomato, thickly sliced
- 2–4 leaves Butter Lettuce
- Homemade Vegan Mayo
Instructions
- Toast your bread according to your personal preference, then spread a thick layer of Vegan Mayo on one side of each slice of Bread*
- Layer the Tempeh onto one side of Bread, then top with Tomato slices. Cover the Sandwich half with Lettuce, then carefully place the mayo-side of the other slice of Bread on top to complete the Sandwich. Serve as desired.
Notes
- If you are making this sandwich ahead of time, I would suggest spreading the Mayo on the Lettuce instead of the Bread, to prevent sogginess.
- If you would like your Smoky Tempeh to be crispier like traditional Bacon, you can slice it thinner and pan-fry it in some oil. Personally, I prefer it the way it is!

I added her signature red onions to it also, which is a recipe I have used like 10 times since knowing it. She wasn’t kidding about those being addicting.
