This Chocolate Cherry Almond Smoothie is creamy, dreamy, and bursting with juicy cherry flavor! Made from only 5 simple and healthy ingredients.

I’ve been obsessed with smoothies lately. Particularly this Chocolate Cherry Almond Smoothie – it’s creamy, dreamy, and bursting with chocolate-y and cherry flavor. A.k.a, what’s not to love?

This summertime smoothie serves as a perfect breakfast, snack, or whenever pick-me-up. It’s made from only 5 healthy ingredients, but totally tastes like dessert!

INGREDIENTS FOR CHOCOLATE CHERRY ALMOND SMOOTHIE

  • Frozen Cherries: fresh cherries are the ideal summer treat, but for smoothies I like to go with frozen. Frozen cherries are (1) already pitted, and (2) frozen at peak ripeness – aka they’re all going to be juicy and sweet. They’re often more cost-effective, too!
  • Cacao Powder: adds creaminess and some beloved chocolate flavor. Cocoa powder will work too, but it has more of a bitter flavor, which will make the smoothie less sweet.
  • Almond Butter: adds some creaminess and healthy fat to this smoothie. I love the flavor combination of almonds and cherries – they work extremely well together, which leads me to…
  • Almond Extract: this is the ultimate secret to making your Cherry Smoothie POP! Almond extract has a subtle marzipan flavor alone, but when combined with cherries it helps this smoothie taste like a decked-out sundae.
  • Non-Dairy Milk: to help blend everything together! Use less for a thicker smoothie, or less for a thinner drink.

I would say this smoothie is moderately sweet – it’s definitely not savory, but it’s not overpoweringly sugary, either. If you prefer to have your smoothies on the sweeter side, I’ve included several suggested sweeteners in the recipe notes below! This recipe is also very forgiving, so feel free to add in your own smoothie “boosters,” too.  Protein powder, hemp hearts, chia seeds, ground flax, and/or baby spinach would all be great!

HOW TO MAKE THE BEST CHOCOLATE CHERRY ALMOND SMOOTHIE

As with any smoothie, it’s pretty simple:

  1. Combine all ingredients to a blender
  2. Blend until smooth, then drink and enjoy!

This recipe will work in both a high-speed blender and a bullet blender – so use whatever is most convenient for you! Also, if use less non-dairy milk and are having trouble with everything blending together, add extra milk in 1 tablespoon increments until everything will blend nicely.

All in all, this Chocolate Cherry Smoothie is the smoothie of my dreams. It’s packed with nutritious food, will keep me satisfied until lunch, and it tastes like dessert, for breakfast. I don’t know about you, but I am all about the dessert-for-breakfast kinda recipes.

  1. I added 2 medjool dates instead of the banana and 1/2 tsp vanilla powder instead of almond extract. So good! TYSM

  2. This is my favourite smoothie to have after a work out with some protein powder! I also add flaxseeds and half a banana. Sooooo good!

  3. This smoothie tastes so decadent! I try not to have it too often so it always feels like a treat. I find it’s very naturally sweet with just the cherries. I also add flax seed (as I do with all my smoothies) and protein powder that’s either peanut butter or vanilla flavored.

  4. um… this tastes like DESSERT! so yummy!!! wow. next time i am craving something chocolatly and naughty, this is what I’ll make. So much heathier! Just had it as a quick lunch -it’s filling because of the almond butter and I also added protein powder.

    1. Thank you for the feedback, Tina. I agree it definitely hits the spot when you’re craving something chocolatey and filling! 🙂

  5. I love this simple recipe! One of my steady ones to make. I use either a ripe banana or few ripe pieces of mango as sweeteners 😉

  6. This is the best smoothie ever! I used peanut butter instead of almond and added some maple syrup. I don’t think it needs the maple syrup, but I put it in almost everything 🙂

  7. WOW! I was hoping this would be yummy but it is in fact AMAZINGLY DELICIOUS!! Like, I feel like I’m having dessert instead of a very healthy breakfast smoothie. I used oat milk and a chocolate collagen protein powder and it turned out so so good. No need for additional sweeteners. This is going on my favorites list!!!

  8. This was fantastic, thank you Caitlin! I subbed vanilla extract for almond (didn’t have any), and added less almond milk so it was a thick smoothie bowl – 10/10!

  9. Thank you for this recipe! It reminds me of a cherry shake; it’s insanely delicious!

  10. Really delicious with the ingredients written up in your recipe Caitlin! I did add vegan protein powder, as you suggested. Flavour and texture is perfect without extra sweetness added. Thank you for sharing this smoothie just in time for summer!
Tonight’s dinner will be your Vegan Lemon Ricotta Pasta…can hardly wait!

  12. I loved it! I don’t have easy access to those ingredients in my country but I’m excited to give it a try when I go back to America!
