How to Make Overnight Oats
Overnight oatmeal is an easy, healthy, and make-ahead breakfast that is so easy to customize based on your flavor preferences or cravings!
There are an almost infinite amount of ways to flavor your overnight oats, but they usually follow a base formula of ingredients:
- Dry Oats: I recommend using a 50-50 mixture of rolled oats and quick-cooking or instant oats for the perfect texture. Instant oats are a bit more creamy, while rolled oats give a hearty texture and chew!
- Chia Seeds: Chia seeds are a great source of fiber and heart-healthy Omega-3 fatty acids. Here we use them to help to thicken our oatmeal! You can also use ground flaxseed for a similar effect.
- Sweetener: Maple syrup is my go-to sweetener for overnight oats, but any dry or liquid sweetener will work here. Feel free to adjust the sweetener to your own personal preference!
- Dairy-Free Milk: Overnight oats get their perfectly creamy texture by using non-dairy milk instead of water
- Yogurt: Yogurt is techincally optional, but I like to use a bit of plant-based yogurt in my overnight oats recipes because it adds an extra “tang” and makes the mixture even thicker. I always include yogurt substitutions in the recipe notes, though!

FAQs:
I recommend using a thick and creamy dairy-free milk like oat milk, soy milk, or cashew milk. Almond milk will also work, but I don’t find it as creamy. Soy milk is my personal favorite and I love that it is also higher in protein!
I prefer to divide my overnight oats into single serving portions and store them in mason jars in the fridge. Your oats will keep in the refrigerator for up to 5 days!
Yes – if you are gluten-free, use gluten-free certified oats to ensure there has been no cross-contamination
