Energy bites are one of my go-to snacks, and for good reason! They’re easy to meal prep, travel-friendly, and a fun way to pack in a ton of wholesome ingredients into a bite-sized treat. Today I’m sharing these Sugar-Free Golden Milk Energy Bites with you – they’re subtly sweet, perfectly chewy, and loaded with warming spices for a satisfying bite.
Not only are these Energy Bites darn delicious, but they’re great for your gut and immune system! All thanks to a few key ingredients:
- California Prunes: this dried fruit isn’t just for your grandma, friends. Not only are prunes budget-friendly, but they’re a nutritional powerhouse! They have a lower glycemic load than other dried fruits and are rich in sorbitol and fiber, which help keep your gut healthy and regular.
- Flax Seeds: are a great source of Omega-3 fatty acids and can also contribute to good gut health
- Brazil Nuts: just 1 Brazil Nut provides your daily dose of selenium and can boost brain function!
- Warming Spices: turmeric, cinnamon, and ginger can reduce inflammation, lower blood pressure, and help to boost immunity. Plus, they taste great together 🙂
These energy bites are inspired by my recent trip to a prune orchard in Northern Californoia with California Prunes. It was so neat to learn more about California Prune farming and see the drying process from start to finish! I’ve loved prunes ever since I was a little kid, but still left this trip with a newfound love for this dried fruit.
Now let’s get on to the recipe!
First, soak the prunes in hot water while you blend the rest of the ingredients
California Prunes are naturally plump and satisfyingly chewy on their own, but soaking them in water gives them a little extra moisture to help blend everything together smoothly. Blending the dry ingredients together first creates a fine flour and gives these Energy Balls a more uniform dough-like consistency.
Drain the prunes, then blend to form a sticky dough.
The dough will be slightly sticky at first, but don’t worry! Transfer the dough into a bowl and let it set in the fridge for 5-10 minutes, where it will firm up.
Roll into 1-2 tablespoon-sized balls, then serve as desired.
This recipe will make either 12 2-tablespoon balls (for a substantial snack) or 24 1-tablespoon balls (for a quick bite). Pro-tip: get your hands slightly wet to prevent the dough from sticking and to help roll the balls more evenly.
You can enjoy these balls as-is, or roll them in some of your favorite crunchy toppings! I went with some Chia Seeds and Hemp Hearts here for an extra boost of healthy fats and plant-based protein.
These Golden Milk Energy Bites are:
- the perfect mid-morning snack or afternoon pick-me-up
- a travel-friendly treat (that will help keep you regular, too!)
- all-around nutritious and delicious

- Prep Time: 15 Minutes
- Cook Time: 0 Minutes
- Total Time: 15 minutes
- Yield: 12 - 24 balls 1x
- Category: Snack
- Method: No Bake
- Cuisine: American
Ingredients
- 1 cup (207 g) California Prunes, loosely packed
- 1/2 cup (79 g) brazil nuts*
- 1/2 cup (56 g) quick-cooking oats
- 1/4 cup (24 g) ground flax
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon ginger powder
- 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
- pinch of black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
- Additional toppings, to roll the balls in (optional)
Instructions
- Add the prunes to a small bowl and cover with boiling water. Let sit for 5 minutes, then drain.
- In the meantime, add the nuts, oats, flax, and spices to a food processor and pulse until a fine flour forms. Add the drained prunes and vanilla extract to the bowl, and process until a fine, thick dough forms, scraping the sides of the device as necessary.
- Transfer the dough into a medium bowl and let sit in the fridge for 5 minutes to set. Slightly wet your hands (to prevent sticking) and roll the ball into 1 or 2-tablespoon sized balls, coating in additional toppings if desired.
- Store the energy bites at room temperature for up to 3 days, in the fridge for up to 10 days, or in the freezer for up to one month.
Notes
- Brazil Nuts can be replaced with equal parts almonds, walnuts, or pumpkin seeds if you have a nut allergy.
- These balls are not very sweet; if you’d like to sweeten things up, add 1 tablespoon of maple syrup or another sweetener to the batter along with the prunes.

Can i replace prunes with raisin ?
How much is the amount to put ?
We haven’t tried it, but it could work! Someone else had made theirs using dates. I’d assume roughly the same amount, maybe a tad less than what the recipe calls for.
Can you replace prunes with Dates? I have some dates on hand I need to use up. Also, I am allergic to nuts (BESIDES peanuts) Can I sub Brazil nut for maybe peanuts? or just leave the nut out? maybe add oats? Just trying to see what else I can do with this recipe.
Sure! You can get similar textures using dates (plus they have a great natural sweetness). Peanuts would totally work! The balls should hold their shape and not be too dry or too wet so adjusting accordingly is key.
Loved these! I used dates in stead of prunes (using what I already had) and subbed fresh turmeric and ginger for dried. Plus added a bit of coconut butter for creaminess. They were delicious, thanks for all your yummy recipes!!
Thanks so much for making! Glad you had some substitutions available on hand!
I just made these and they are delicious ???? the perfect little snack ! They will definitely become part of my weekly meal prep. Thanks for sharing ????
Thanks so much!
Made these with walnuts instead of Brazil nuts & rolled them in coconut flakes and they are so delicious & perfectly sweet, I thought I’d want to add some maple syrup but not even! I think it’s safe to say these are my new obsession, & perfect for fall when I’m craving the golden milk flavor.
That’s awesome! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for the awesome recipe !
That’s so kind – thanks!
Is there any way to guestimate the calories in the energy bites? Thank you.
We don’t do any calorie calculations but there are some online resources that can help you! Thanks!
Can I use rolled oats instead of quick oats?
If you use rolled oats they may have more of a texture. If you feel comfortable troubleshooting the ratios just in case they’re a little more dry/wet then it should be fine!
These look and sound DELISH! I feel like it’s so rare to come across energy bites that use dried fruit other than dates but I’m always so excited when I do. Definitely gonna stock up on prunes this weekend and try these
Totally give them a try and let us know what you think!
Hey!
Thanks so much for the recipe.
I don’t have flax on hand can i omit it?
You’re welcome, Moon! Yes, you can omit it. Chia seeds can also be a good substitute.
